New Life 7

February 9, 2010

Miles awoke in his one bedroom efficiency to the sound of his alarm clock blaring. It was almost time for his shift at the bookstore to begin.
It had been one year since he and his sister had swapped bodies back. Upon finding himself in his old body, Miles immediately regretted saying “yes.” While he was genuinely happy to see his sister smile for the first time in years, he knew that his life, as he knew it, was over.
Sure enough, Katie returned home to Chuck and announced that as soon as she gave birth to their child, she was leaving him. Since she was not the Katie who had spent the last several years in a relationship with Chuck, she had no trouble breaking his heart so that she could live her own life.
Katie, finally given the chance to have life she dreamed about, dissapred without telling anybody where she was going. She moved far away — somewhere she knew she would never have to run into anybody from either of her old lives again.
Chuck now a single father found  support from the most unlikely of sources.
Miles, Katie’s black sheep brother, came out of hiding and insisted on helping Chuck take care of his son. While Chuck had never known Miles that well, he found himself warming up to him like an old friend — the two of them got along so great together.
But whenever Chuck tried to set Miles up with one of his co-workers, he always declined.
While there was no hormones driving his affections now, Miles was still in love with the man who he had been married to — even if he could never tell him the truth.
Miles knew that the only way to be a part of the lives of his husband and son was to be as the best friend and uncle — and nothing more.
